Jet Airways has emerged as the airline with the maximum number of passenger complaints during April and May.

This is new data that the Director-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has started reporting on.

Jet Airways officials were unavailable for comment, but official sources told Business Line that the number of complaints is bound to increase as the number of passengers carried go up.

Set to increase

“As the number of passengers carried increases, there is bound to be an increase in complaints. Take, for example, the US – its domestic air transport market is huge compared to here.

“So, there, the passenger complaints are calculated per one million passengers flown, while here it is per 10,000 passengers flown,” official sources said.

In May, there were 690 passenger-related complaints against Jet Airways, followed by 234 against SpiceJet, IndiGo (193), Kingfisher (169), JetLite (139), Go Air (73), NACIL (47) and Paramount (4).

During the month, Jet carried 8.69 lakh passengers, while SpiceJet flew 6.32 lakh passengers. In April, there were 582 passenger-related complaints against Jet Airways, followed by Kingfisher (231), SpiceJet (195), JetLite (172), IndiGo (131), Go Air (89), NACIL (43) and Paramount (7).

The nature of the complaints was not available as the DGCA merely collates the information provided by the airlines.

Doubts have also been raised as to whether some airlines are not registering passenger complaints as some of them are perceived to have reported very few complaints.
